Just noticed something interesting which might point someone who has
more of a clue (ie: not me! :-) in the right direction...

Cygwin operations, such as starting a cygwin shell, and in fact, even
doing an 'ls' are similarly painfully slow on the desktop in question...

Does this give any clue?
