"never" is a long time to test, but but I do know that normally, without
clicking the folder, the overlay is correctly drawn after 20 or 30
seconds or so, and I've waited a lot longer than that (about 5 minutes
I'd say)

There is no significant activity (disk or otherwise) when it's halted,
so I would guess this is not the issue.

I'll try to muster more patience, to see if it unlocks after a really
long time.
