Can I just get this straight:
Create repository using SVN.
Checkout using TSVN (.svn) is OK.
Checkout using TSVN (_svn) makes a broken WC.

Create repository using TSVN (_svn)
Checkout using TSVN (_svn) also makes a broken WC.

Have I got that right?

Absolutely. As Tim said, it is only the WC that is different. Sounds
like the 'special needs' version is broken.
