Ok, but how should that look like?
I mean, we have our progress dialog. Should we add another button there
which is visible in such a case? What should the button text read?

I'm not sure about that yet either. We have the information in the
working copy if a file is locked, but only after an update. And we know
the name of the lock owner. But we don't know if the currently logged on
user is the same as the lock owner (no way to determine the user until a
commit is done).
