The inline editing you mean won't be good:

1) There is only the first line or 80 characters of the log message
displayed there
2) log messages can be multi-line

As this feature is not intended for everyday use and also needs a
server-side hook script (which makes it a expert-only feature IMHO) I
prefer this "hidden feature".

Another solution would be to offer a new dialog for editing author and
log message called by a context menu entry of a list item in the "Show
Log" dialog.
