I tend to find that providing too many options in a tool aimed at
non-admin users is almost always a bad idea.

In effect, the cache just serves to accelerate a function that's already
there (icon overlays) and make feasible another function that's already
there (recursive overlays). Why even make it apparent to the user that
something has changed under the hood? If its not ready to be moved in as
"the way" then maybe best to let it sit as a documented option. If
everyone is agreed that this is the way overlays should ultimately work
(and this seems to be the case from the archives) then why not make it
the default action in the nightlies and get it into an official release
all the more rapidly?

My two cents, but id hate to get yet another thing in subversion where
there's an apparently arbitrary choice between a little understood
difference (bdb vs fsfs, _svn vs .svn - still haven't figured that one
out).
