IIRC the reason the new variables were added was that there isn't a standard
way - some external tools expect them in a different order from the others,
or the exact command line syntax is odd.
Perhaps it would be an idea to automagically pass the variables if there are
no command line parameters, but do what the parms say if it's present? I.E.
have a default but allow the user to over ride it for odd tools?
Or have I got it all wrong?
