Can I select the top folder and uncheck "read only" to verify or will
this monkey with the .svn directories?

Are there any 'read-only' files in your WC (not in the hidden .SVN
filders,
just in your bit)

SVN's handling of trying to update over read-only files on Windows is
truely
dismal, and can lead to all sorts of tiresome problems, which generally
culminate in having to clear out at least a section of the WC and
re-checkout.
