I don't think that's really analogous, because regardless of how you base
an array, you only need one number to refer to one element.

To refer to one revision in SVN you need both N and N-1.

No, I agree with you there.

I think that for direct entry of numbers, we are stuck with the way that
SVN does it.

If there are lots of people who want at a more 'point and click' way of
chosing revisions, the exact details of the actual numbers are perhaps more
up for grabs.
