There is a gotcha that caught me the other day. You need to use "Update
to Revision" and re-select the "top folder only" checkbox if you ever
update that top level folder. A normal update will fill in all the
subtrees that you carefully missed out before.

My preference would be to create a normal folder, and within that create
a separate subfolder for each subtree that you need. You can then do a
separate checkout in each of these folders.

There may also be a way to do this with svn:externals, but I don't know
enough about them.
