Personally I vote for pulling it, this sort of checking SHOULD be done on
the server.

There are hooks available - and they work on windows servers, personally I
believe there is no reason for them to not be installed.

At least, there could be some sort of option which that hungry code is only
ran if the user specifies it to be.

If UI clutter is an issue (that 'Look and Feel' tab is getting rather
crowded), maybe stick it in the registry for the moment until somebody with
the skills feels the need to redo that tab - maybe a treeview view ala
Visual Studio .net Options
