Yes, I thought it might have pathological cases like this. It's also
annoying in that it resorts the folder, which can cause things to jump around.

Sounds fine (particularly if the old way + corrections/fixes has started to
work!)

There *must* be a way to do this 'properly', because the shell itself copes
fine with a change in single files, doing just the right amount of update.
