Perhaps enabling 'Diff' for folders could do this? It would show what
'Check for Updates' shows, but only shows working copy vs working base
changes (i.e. changes you have made).

Only issue I could see with doing this would be to cause confusion
between whether you should use 'Check for Updates' or 'Diff'.

You can do a 'Diff' on a file to compare working copy to working base,
so perhaps 'Diff' on a folder to do the same, recursively, would make sense?
