And in such a case simply apply a patch partially? That would leave
the working copy in an undefined state. _Not_ a good idea.

I've looked a _lot_ for such a tool, but couldn't find one. That's why
I finally decided to write TortoiseMerge.
If you ever find such a tool, please let me know.
