Nearly right. It is the second tab in settings (Look & feel) and it is just
the first box you need to uncheck (recurse into folders to fetch the
status).

If this is checked, explorer has to trawl the whole folder structure looing
for changed files in order to update the top level status overlay.

If it is unchecked, the folder overlay only indicates the status of its
immediate contents, not subfolders.
