[TSVN] Does RSA ssh work?

Hi all,
I have previously used Tortoisesvn with svn+ssh://.. and passwords but now
need to use it with
rsa public/private keys

svn works using (from cgywin)
svn checkout svn+ssh://mpford@....:/svnroot/apps/ad/trunk ad
and prompts me for my passphrase

when I try using
C:\cygwin\bin\ssh -i C:\cygwin\bin\id_rsa mpford@....

in the network setting of TortoiseSVN
I get a dos box (actually two in a row) to enter my passphrase and then get
"Connection closed unexpectedly"

any ideas?
