OK, the problem seems to be with four-byte characters (yes, I'm trying to commit emoji). I don't get the error with three-byte ones.

So for example, if I run this in a terminal:
echo -e "\xF0\x9F\x8C\xB5"

copy the result to the clipboard, and paste it into the commit dialog, I get the error.
