Thanks for getting back to me so promptly. One thing my colleagues and I noticed that might interest you is that we don't see this effect with Subclipse 1.2.4. I don't know what would have changed between those two versions to either cause the status to be checked much more often, or to take much longer to do it. I'm afraid I haven't succeeded in debugging the issue far enough to know which of those it is... :-\
I'll experiment with your suggestion re: ignored resources (thanks again for that). If this does appear to be a new issue post-1.2.4, it is possible there is something more going on here than just 22,000 statuses and there's actually a bug here, if only in my Subversion configuration? You say some degree of processing will need to be done - would you expect several minutes worth (at least), on an unloaded 2x2.6Ghz box with 2Gb RAM?
