I had the same MKACTIVITY "Could not parse response status line" problem in Netbeans, and fixed it by disabling the HTTP proxy.
Capture some network packets in a tool like Wireshark and see where the request goes and what the reply is. For me, the HTTP proxy was getting confused on the MKACTIVITY request and replying with an error. Confusingly enough, the same proxy works fine for some SVN operations... go figure.
