Checking out with a different tool and then importing into Eclipse is
pretty common. Under normal conditions, the project will even be
automatically connected with Subclipse. The fact that it didn't means
it is not recognized as a working copy. The only restriction is that
the folder you import, the one that holds the .project file, must be a
valid SVN working copy. Nothing beneath that folder matters, although
typically they would also be working copy.

The main thing is that you cannot import a folder "above" your working
copy and have it recognized.
