It is very stable, and yes 1.5 client works with 1.4 server. Our server is running 1.3. The 1.5 working copy format has changed though, so if you do use the client you cannot mix it with older versions of TortoiseSVN or the command line. At least not on the same WC. TortoiseSVN has stable nightlies available too though.
