I know this doesn't answer the question, but do you really need to
commit the class files? You can export the project to an archive (e.g.
ZIP, JAR) and include the class files as well as the source code in it
and hand that in.

That is, unless your teacher is planning to retrieve your homework
directly from the SVN repository. In that case, I don't know.
