Someone had a patch working once. There were some bugs in the patch, and
the user never followed up on them,

The patch itself was not a great solution. There is no good way to handle
this situation, the CVS plug-in does not even handle it well. That being
said, getting rid of the performance problem is obviously a huge first
step. You can probably search the dev@ archives and find some of the
patches.
