Sorry for not providing more information. I thought the problem is
already well known or perfectly described with the call stack.

SVNKit.

OpenSuse 10.1
Will try Debian as well ...

See my provided .log file excerpt:
java.version=1.5.0_06
java.vendor=Sun Microsystems Inc.

I previously tried jre-1.4.2-sun but this seems to be completely
unsupported by eclipse (not subclipse) itself!??

No version :-)

I have already updated the working directory from the commandline. But I
cannot currently further test eclipse because it runs on a remote server
and Xorg does not yet support redirecting a running application to
another host ...
