I understand the problem. Stuffing so much icons would be impractical.
Yet from my experience of the last two days it would be usefull using a
special icon at the directory level for the "When there are only
unversioned files" case.

May I make another suggestion ?
The Mylar plugin has a nice feature. It adds an entry in the Help menu,
"Mylar UI Legend", showing the signification of its icons. Having
something analogous for subclipse would be nice. But this is only a
bounty...
