I think your heading me down the right path on the problem. One of the Mac users installed Metissan earlier and his started working. We think the issue may have been a change with the JavaHL. Metissan works, but the binaries are so out of date (1.3.x).

I think it has been mentioned here and on the Subversion users list about Collabnet needing someone to build and test binary installs for Mac OS and they would distribute the build. I think I may look into helping out on this.
