Actually you are correct. I keep forgetting about this problem in Ubuntu:

That aspect is strange. All I can think of is that somehow it changes
your authentication method once the new password is set. Maybe it
changes you from Basic auth to SSPI or something????

JavaHL 1.3 *might* not have the same problems on Ubuntu if you can get
it. I think it does though. Subclipse does not require 1.4, the only
issue there was your existing working copies got upgraded by SVNKit.
As long as you checkout again, 1.3 would be OK.
