First, this is not the best list to find the answer to this question, you should maybe have a look at the Subversion ml to get a more valuable answer instead of the subclipse one : http://subversion.tigris.org/servlets/ProjectMailingListList.

FWIW, I'd say it's because under Unix, the equivalent of the "hidden files" under windows begins with a dot. So by default, for example, issuing a ls in a versioned directory will not print the .svn directory. By the way, I think it's far better like this : the user should not be forced to be aware of the versionning tool metadata as he was with CVS. It's tools internals and is not designed to be opened/seen by end users. I don't know how it behaves under Windows, but I suppose that checkouting a project puts .svn directories with hidden status ?

Just out of curiosity, was the user taken out (.svn/? vs the ond
CVS/Root) because it caused too many problems with people copying
directories around?
