How it is supposed to work:
Any 1.x client should be able to talk to any 1.x server. That's the API contract.
If you have a 1.3 working copy checked out, fiddle with it using any 1.4 client
and then try to do things with a different 1.3 client, the 1.3 client will not
understand the now 1.4 working copy.
So client-side compatibility is not guaranteed within a working copy from
version to version, but client-server compatibility is.
