Coming from VSS, I think I had a misunderstanding of externals. Instead of it
being some property that needs to be set on the client-side, it is instead
set on the server side. I was thinking subclipse would need to perform a
different type of SVN checkout call.

The SVN way seems a much better way to handle these things!
