You should tell your friend to update to 1.0.3.

Did you try to open the same URL in a browser when the problem happened? A
connection timed out error is pretty clear to me. The server did not
respond, which is not uncommon for hosting services like SourceForge.

Generally, the JavaHL adapter works better than JavaSVN with the
SourceForge servers, although I believe most of the problems have been
corrected, and I do not think they ever affected the checkout process. I'd
say the server was just down or busy.
