There is no question that JNI adds some overhead, although I do not think
it is that much. On a really long operation like a checkout, I doubt that
it is a factor. It is possible that the JavaHL HTTP handling via Neon is
faster than the HTTP classes you use from Java. Of course it is also
possible that the reverse is true. Just pointing out that there are
potentially more factors than JNI involved in performance, especially when
we are talking about the networking.
