Your project was hardly unusable, all you had to do was right-click,
choose Properties and define the Java Build Path. The .classpath file
would then be recreated. You also have the option of copying the file
somewhere before the checkout deletes it.

There has been a lot of talk about adding this feature to the Subversion
checkout command. It seems there is general agreement that the command
should be enhanced. I hope it will make it into 1.3, if not, it should
come soon after.
