I committed this. You are right, it does make a big difference in
performance. I am sure this will wind up biting me in the ass, but we
shall see.

I didn't read your original message closely enough. I wasn't suggesting
that we had changed the same area of code. What we changed was a bug
where innocent requests to update something was causing the StatusCache to
refresh too much. I was thinking it was the same sort of problem.
