I opened a bug at http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=62979 which
describes what I found to be the problem and how I managed to get it to
build. Basically, there were some missing directories that were needed
for some of the files that were being created during the emerge process,
so I just created the directories after the emerge process began and the
build went smoothly after that.
