Thanks, that helped. Kind of a bummer, tho, as the project was not born
under eclipse. I figured the easiest way to fix this was to simply add
the .project to the repository... When I did this, I was warned by
subclipse that I was about to explicitly add a resource that is normally
ignored. I aborted the operation. Is there a better way to manage this?

your .project file is missing the java nature. look through your svn
history
to find the culprit commit, and reverse-merge.
