automating addition of new files and directories

I'm a new user to subversion so pardon if this is a dumb question. I've
added new files and directories across a large source tree in my workspace
but without using the svc add or mkdir command.
 
Is there a command or script that can add files and directories not in the
repository to it (short of writing my own)? svc import if like CVS import
would be inappropriate I would guess. svc add, I note, supports recursion
but on a presumably completely new tree.
