I'm not trying to "share" anything. (I can get Eclipse to create a new
repository module from my project without problem).
I'm trying to "Synchronize your local project with the existing remote
module", to use the Eclipse terminology. That is, there is already a
directory/module in the remote SVN repository, and I am trying to create
a new project and connect it to that existing repository, so I can then
check out a working copy of that repository into my Eclipse project
directory.
So there has to be a "directory of the same name" -- That is why it is
saying "Module
'[module name]' already exists remotely.[...]", as it should.

No. Nothing is added to the error log when I try this.

Graham.
Is there anything related in your Eclipse log file (<eclipse
workspace>/.metadata/.log)?

this myself.
Dare I point out that if you're using Eclipse, then you're set up to
develop eclipse plugins. Or am I completely crazy? ;)

with the existing remote module" functionality?
Without a hitch (and always have).
Are you "Using the project name as module name" in the screen after
selecting your existing module? If so, have you confirmed there is no
directory of the same name in the directory under which you're trying
to share?
Eg. If your existing module is
http://yourserver.com/svn/repos/source/ and your project is "MyProject",
have you ensured there is not
http://yourserver.com/svn/repos/source/MyProject already existing? I
know it's stating the obvious but .... *shrug* Grasping at straws here
now since I've never had a problem.
