Well, the checkout performance is very probably related to that frequent
non-recursive status update.
I have it in my todo list and I expect I can focus on that sometime next
week.
Regarding the commit access, there is still a lot to fix and/or improve in
the synchronization code,
so it might be more convenient for both of us. 
I would appreciate it. It will be an honor if I could be promoted to a
commiter role.
