Slow checkout performance after recent changes

I suppose this is to Martin.

I noticed that when I checkout a largeish project now that it spends a
very long time at the end of the checkout process (89%). Does this have
something to do with that problem you mentioned where we are requesting
the status too frequently? Is that something you are still looking into,
or does it just take longer to build the new cache? Everything else seems
much faster.

BTW, now that the repository has moved to tigris.org it is easy for us to
give people commit access. Would you be interested in joining the project
as a full committer? If so, I will send out a nomination email.
