I would guess it was to avoid specifying classpaths from the command line.

I communicated a bit more with the most recent person that had the problem.
They had the same version of the JAR in their ext folder, even copied our
JAR, and it still had problems. So I think it is actually a classloader
issue, not a compatability one. I am not sure why though. Our usage seems
so trivial.

I made the 1.4 change today, I will test it out on Monday and likely commit
it. Assuming I do not hear any contrary opinions.
