adding a column to the vertical ruler

I tried to add a new column to the vertical ruler (for annotate command,
but it does not mind).
It does not really work (when painted, the size of the canvas is 0,0 ...)

It seems that this is the same thing for the "line number column".
Why this column does not appear when a file is opened from cvs (or svn)
repository ?

If someone has a clue on that ...
