There are a number of problems with this idea, not limited to:

  * considerations about access control in the pristine area being
    different than for the woring copy proper;
  * the fact that working copies would stop being self-contained, which
    has a bearing on moving them on the same machine or transferring
    them to a different machine.

These issues can be solved, but IMO there are much, much more important
things we should be doing with pristines and the working copy metadata
in general, for example:

  * making pristines optional (for some classes of files);
  * moving externals metadata into the top-level WC database.

Therefore I'd say that centralised pristine storage is far down the list
of features we'd like to add.
