Maybe currently (after your argumentation and Evgeny's tests),
consensus about this is starting to appear. But judging from Branko's
and Stefan's first replies after your commit, I'd say there certainly
was no consensus at first.

I think it would have been much better if you would have discussed
this up front (which it seems you could have done just as easily as
arguing about it later), before ripping out a feature like this ...
