Can you add your scons version to this issue so we can look at it in
more detail via the scons history?

I verified that some rpaths were set with latest scons on FreeBSD a few
weeks ago.

Usually scons ignores new variables for compatibility between versions.

It does not handle rpath for me. See this serf issue:
