Committed in r1490045 and nominated form backport to 1.8.x. I'll take
care of the registration once I finish writing up the specification,
which won't likely be until after the hackathon since I'd rather
concentrate on other things during the hackathon. There's no reason
to wait on starting to use it for the registration.
