If this would be backported to serf-1.1.x, and a new release of serf
is cut with the fix, could this be taken along for the next 1.7
release of svn? Is this simply up to the packagers (managing their
dependencies etc.), or can we bump the recommended / required serf
versions in our buildscripts / dependencies for 1.7.x ?

It's not really a deal-breaker, because 1.7 has neon, but still ...
this bug makes 1.7 w/serf unusable in some https environments. It
might be nice to fix that, also for 1.7 (and give (ra_)serf a little
bit more possible coverage that way).
