Mark's advice said, I think the correct answer is "it depends on the
SASL module being used" --- since for the handshake svnserve uses SASL
in one way (namely: embeds SASL's responses in the ra_svn protocol
tuple), while for the rest of the connection in another way (just adds
| libsasl in front of the incoming/outgoing network socket).
