Gavin, I had talked about starting on a site design in IRC, yes. But we
needn't compete over design ideas or anything. If you've got something in
mind, I'm happy to review and discuss it with you.

My primary concern right now about the site involves making sure that folks
can find what they are looking for by following logical navigational steps.
I'm not fond of the current subversion.t.o approach which presumes that
certain final-destination pages are of general interest to everyone. I
believe that our home page should do three things well:

   * Briefly explain what Subversion is and does. Flip your Marketing
and PR knob to 11, then dial it back just a hair to cut out the
     obnoxiousness.

   * Briefly highlight the latest news from the community (which at the
very least involves noting the current stable release(s)). Let
folks see life in our project.

   * Triage visitors by their role / relationship to Subversion. Are
you just exploring this whole Subversion thing? Go here. Already
a user? Go here. Want to contribute? Go here to find out how.
Already a developer? Over here is some stuff you might wanna know.

In other words, make the front page of general utility to everyone by
avoiding too many direct links to final destinations, and get folks into
pages of general interest by role instead as quickly as possible. 1-click
site visitation is not a goal if for many folks it actually results in 19
clicks and never finding what you seek.

If we can do all that while keeping the site clean and professional-looking,
awesome. If we can move community-maintained content (like the links,
testimonials, contrib listing, etc.) out of static HTML pages and into a
wiki, better still. And if we can make the wiki look like the rest of the
site, we get to keep the trophy, the prom queen, and her daddy's new Mercedes.

(By the way, I'm really digging the http://felix.apache.org/ design and
navigational philosophy.)
