The history, the file contents, the paths, the bug reports, the archived
mails, all refer to this history. If you recreate a new history, it is
still a history, but all these reference are dead or have to be fixed, so
it is much less useful to have them.

Sure, it could be much worse. I do not see that as a good argument to
accept a pain that could be fully avoided.

A migration is being planned, which could limit its effect to moving the
repos from one server to another, and as we're not changing the tool it
could be pretty painless.

Instead of that, it is going to be a full renumbering, possibly some
renaming, and breaking every reference inside and outside of the project,
for an added value which is still eluding me.

Note that you do not have to convince me, I'm just a partial citizen.
